Winter is approaching, and with it, an elderly woman's death. Everything is in order, except her affairs of the heart. She sits at her desk, composing the final chapter of her life---a confession---a letter to the granddaughter she raised, now estranged and living in far-off America. In it is a story of love, death and propriety, of words unspoken, of lives wasted, of secrets she had vowed to take to her grave but must now share to heal lives mortally wonded by a lie. It is the ultimate gift of love and liberation, from one woman to another--a raod map straight to the center of ourselves, where we can gather the courage to follow our hearts.

Most best sellers from abroad don't make it big in America, but this work-which has sold over 500,000 copies in Italy-may be different. Billed as an Italian Bridges of Madison County, it consists of a series of letters from an elderly woman in Trieste to her young granddaughter in America, admonishing her to "follow her heart."

Translated from the Italian by John Cullen. 6 weeks of a journal written by a middle aged Italian lady in 1992, ostensibly to her adult granddaughter who has moved to America. Basically an apology for not expressing her feelings, so that should appeal to American readers, since that is all we do in America.
