An urban fantasy set within an SCA-like organization in a
Berkeley-esque town. The plot is engaging, but the true strength
of the book lies in it's examination of fantasy, role-playing and
masks. It' not "The Last Unicorn" by any means but there are true
glimpses of poetry and magic in this book as well.

This book is a tale of modern fantasy set in the California Bay area. A wanderer goes to visit his friend in the Bay Area and finds himself mixed up with a group of people who have formed a society for medieval preservation. He also finds himself mixed up with witches, demons, viking spirits, and other assorted stuff. This book really isn't that good, in my opinion. The characters are silly and stilted, like in your average Dean Koontz novel. The plot is all over the place. Toward the end it gets better, but it takes forever to get started. If you like the novels of Tom Deitz, which are very derivative of this, you might like this. But me personally, I don't like this author writes. Maybe some of his other stuff is better, since so many people love his stuff, but this was a very silly, unbelievable, EVEN BY FANTASY STANDARDS!
