I got a copy of this book to review through the Amazon Vine program. This was an excellent novel and is something of a sequel to 14 (although it can definitely be read as a stand alone as well).
Mike Erikson is just your normal run of the mill high school teacher, at least thats what most people think. Then Mike is contacted by an old friend from DARPA who wants him to come and work on a project for the summer. Ends up a DARPA funded lab has come up with an invention that could make teleportation a reality; the only problem is something just feels wrong about the project. Before they start mass-producing they want Mike to go in and work with the lab people to make sure everything is okay. Mike with his off the chart IQ and eidetic memory is the perfect guy for the job and he decides to accept the job out of curiosity.
There is a lot of mystery in here and it is a bit of a sci-fi thriller as well. The mystery builds slowly but is completely gripping...you just know things are going to go horribly horribly wrong by the end of it all. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and had a lot of trouble putting the book down.
Mike is a great character and fun to read about. I never really thought about the issues a eidetic memory could cause for a person...and this book explore that issue in an interesting way. The side characters are all very interesting and all have complex issues of their own.
There is also a lot about time travel and parallel realities in this book too. The story ends up tying in a bit with Clines novel 14. I knew when those darn green cockroaches showed up again we were all in trouble.
Overall this is a fun and fast-paced sci-fi thriller that I really enjoyed. Its creative and quirky and full of fun characters. There is excellent mystery here and some interesting sci-fi twists. I would definitely recommend this as an excellent book for those who like sci-fi thrillers.
