Not the best, nor a typical entry into the series. I found the flashing back and forth between the two time periods distracting and the pulling together of the two to be overly convenient, but the new characters introduced are very good and the modern day part of the book makes for a good read overall. If you are new to this series, start at the beginning.

I found this offer of Nevada Barr to be absorbing and enthralling. I had gotten bored with Anna and dropped the series. But out of boredom one day I picked up Flashback and was instantly engrossed. I loved the duel mysteries that drew you deeper into the fort and the history of the place. It was moody and (like Firestorm) very scary. I loved it.

True Nevada Barr style. The ending always eludes you until the last few pages. Good mystery with humor injected at just the right places!

I had a hard time with this one, it wasn't as interesting as I initially thought it would be.

Anna Pigeon is out on another adventure, in Dry Tortugas NP this time. Ms. Barr deftly weaves some Civil War/ Lincoln Assassination history into this tale. It starts out rather slowly with lots of background details, but the ending is so thoroughly satisfying that you really must keep reading.

As always she pictures another NP really skillfully, and her writing about the Park Service and its diverse employees is fun and engaging. Fans of Pigeon and the Parks will like this tale.

I'm a big Nevada Barr fan and this is an example of why I am. I ran into a forest ranger on Tybee Island, GA who had just finished reading this too and said a lot of the rangers read Nevada Barr because her descriptions of the parks are so real.

My bookclub read this selection from Nevada Barr and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, she alternates chapters and one of our members read the book in that manner--first all present day, then all in the past. I don't, however, recommend that method. What I found intriguing was the history about John Wilkes Booth and those who helped him along with the woman who was married to the commander of the prison there on the islands. Her letters and Nevada reading them and having a mystery of her own to solve made it a doubly enjoyable read. If you enjoy historical fiction you'll especially like this. It's the only book of hers that I've kept.

Another great Barr book set in a National Park with Park Ranger Anna Pigeon. This one is at Dry Tortugas NP off Key West. It was once a Union Civil War fortress and then prison, including the famous Dr. Mudd of the Lincoln assassination conspiracy, officially at least. Barr uses a literary technique of two alternating chapter narrators, one from now, one from the 1864. Thus one new crime and one very old unsolved one. It will make you want to go there.

A good Anna Pigeon novel set in the Florida Dry Tortugas National Park. It was different because there was some ghost issues that Anna had to deal with. If you like Nevada Barr and Anna Pigeon, then you will enjoy this one.

This is an interesting mystery story in an historical setting--Fort Jefferson, a lonely outpost in the Dry Tortugas National Park. If you've ever been to the Dry Tortugas, Nevada Barr's descriptions will bring back fond memeories.

Park ranger Anna Pigeon takes an assignment at Dry Tortugas National Park and through flashbacks to the past, becomes part of a historical mystery centering on the "Lincoln conspirators" imprisioned at Fort Jefferson. Threats from this distant past collide with danger in the here and now.

Another great installment in the Ranger Anna Pigeon detective series, this time set in Dry Tortugas N. P. Fascinating interweaving of history with mystery!

What a great book. Nevada Barr/Anna Pigeon are at it again. This time they are at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, just 70 miles from Key West. The fort is on an island and is about as remote as you can get. Anna has the job of temporary Supervisor over quite a motley crew. Add to that, smugglers, wrecks, underwater sleuthing, and, oh yes, ghosts, and you have quite a lively and interesting scenario. Mystery readers will enjoy this book.

Interesting bits of history about Lincoln conspirators who where held off Key West (some probably innocent who were trapped in the public hunt for the real players). Park ranger Anna Pigeon ends up finding some information from the past and facing current dangers while trying to decide if she wants to marry Paul.

The flipping between now and Civil War times allowed me to put the book down every once and a while, when a segment of the Civil War erra account ended. Otherwise I would have read it straight through. A great Anna Pigeon tale.

Not the best Nevada Barr book in the series but still good if you like Anna Pigeon.

I really liked the way Nevada Barr tells two stories here. Normally not a big fan of the whole "flashback" thing, I was completely drawn into the story told by her great-great-aunt who lived at this fort in the past. The history of the fort is really brought to life in the story, and, of course, there's a murder to solve.

FROM OUR EDITORS
Ranger Anna Pigeon takes her tour of national parks to the Dry Tortugas, an idyllic preserve seventy miles off the coast of Key West. Even in this island paradise, Anna cannot escape murder. A mysterious boat explosion and the discovery of seemingly unidentifiable body parts catapults our intrepid investigator out of arcadia and into dire crimes both past and present. Like its nine predecessors, this Anna Pigeon mystery abounds in local atmosphere and memorable characters.

This Nevada Barr book does not follow her traditional style. She manages to have two on-going mysteries that in the end are tied together. Really enjoyed this novel.

Nevada Barr's flackback character (trust me, you'll understand when you read it) has a fascinating story to tell. Anna Pigeon? Not so much in this one. But the combination of their stories makes for a good Nevada Barr mystery. Not her best, but certainly a good summertime read.

Postponing a decision about a proposal of marriage, Anna Pigeon takes a post as a temporary supervisory ranger on remote Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park, a grouping of tiny islands in a natural harbor 70 miles off Key West. This island paradise has secrets it would keep, not just in the present, but in shadows from its gritty past when it served as a prison during the Civil War, and for the Lincoln assassination conspirators afterward.
Here on this last lick of the US, in a giant crumbling fortress, Anna has little company besides the occasional sunburned tourist or unruly shrimper. When her sister, Molly, sends her a packet of letters from a great-great-aunt who lived at the fort with her husband, a career soldier, Anna's fantasy life is filled with visions of this long-ago time.
But a mysterious boat explosion--and the discovery of unidentifiable body parts--keeps Anna anchored to the present, and she soon finds crimes of yesterday and today closing in on her. A tangled web that was woven before she arrived threatens her sanity and her life. Cut off from the mainland by miles of water, poor phone service, and sketchy radio contact, Anna must find answers and weather a storm that rivals the hurricanes for which the islands are famous.
