Although her husband was a Confederate officer, physically and mentally wounded in the Civil War, 13 year-old Abby's former mistress was from the North and opposed to slavery. So at Emancipation, she began to pay her former slaves to work for her. But what Abby wants is to find and rejoin her mother, who was separated from her when she was a baby, and no one will tell her how to reach her. I found the mystery a bit confusing, although the background of the post-Civil War South seems realistic enough.
Very good book. Kept my interest, easy reading!
