On the wedding day this process reached its climax, and only the closest relatives and friends were permitted to enter the bridal bedroom.

Nevertheless the Khoja sisters had always taken it for granted that entry there was one of the prerogatives of their status.

It was not to be expected that marriage between even the lowliest member of the caste-conscious Khoja family and a blustering bus-driver could be anything but disastrous. Mrs. Lutchman had to look for compensation in trading, in her children, in fortune-tellers and finally in solitude.
