This book was very good and I could not put it down. The story is about a herd of deer who live peacefully till an evil deer takes down the the good deer. There is a myth among the deer of the Firebringer, a deer born with an oak leaf on his forehead, who will lead them back into peace. The Firebringer is born and hidden among his own till that too proves unsafe. So he leaves the herd. It tells of his story with the other animals, traveling over the countryside to get to the otherside of the mountains for the answers he is looking for. Will he save his herd? I've kept this book to read over and over again.

Well-written book about a herd of deer. Reminiscent of Brian Jacques.

I enjoy David Clement-Davies books for his unique use of animals and landscape to tell an interesting story. The plot, characters, and action have substance; they aren't mere machinations to make a larger point or simply entertain. There is also an underlying examination of using animals to examine different kinds of leadership and government. The events of the animals also intermingle with the history of mankind in an interesting way. I definitely recommend.
Intriguing story and not similar to the author's other works. I enjoyed this more than his young adult books.
My daughter LOVED this book (she's 13).
