I pre-read this for my 11-year-old son, who will be reading it soon, so I can only offer an adult's opinion. I found Finest Kind to be a very engrossing novel about a boy faced with a brand-new, overwhelming life, who discovers that he is able to take care of himself and his family competently, and who makes a good friend in the process. I found the description of life in Maine in the 1800s to be fascinating. I'm looking forward to finding out what my son thinks of it.
