British series novel that is a cut above the detective genre. If you haven't discovered Deborah Crombie yet, this one is a good candidate (it is not necessary to have read all books in this series to appreciate this one by its own).

A little different from the usual mystery in that it involves the paranormal. A very good mystery.

This has got to be one of Crombie's finest books. Not only has mystery but a touch of the supernatureal. In this one, Kincaid is not the center of a mystery but is involved at the request of his cousin to help on an unusual case in Glastonbury. Glastonbury is revered as the site of an ancient abby with strong druid powers. A great read that is unusual, mysterious and skillfully written. I highly recommend!

besides that she just writes some of the best british mysteries in the genre; this particular entry i specially enjoyed because of its location and the history she includes regarding this very popular tourist spot in england. i didn't know very much about glastonbury tor before reading this. i found myself looking up pictures and more information on the area after reading this. aside from that, i found it to be an especially strong plot and entry in the series.

Glastonbury is revered as the site of an ancient abbey and a source of Druid power. When Duncan Kincaid's cousin Jack calls from there to ask for help on a rather unusual matter, Duncan welcomes the chance. He comes across an extraordinary chronicle almost 1000 years old that reveals that something terrible shattered the abbey's peace long ago - knowledge that will spark violence that reaches into the present.

Seventh in the series featuring Scotland Yard's Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James. Kincaid's cousin in Glastonbury has been having some interesting experiences, but when one of his friends is badly injured in a hit-and-run, he asks Kincaid to come visit and ask a few questions. Kincaid and James are no longer working together but he can invite her on a vacation. There are quite a few supernatural doings in this one, a definite difference from her previous books. A dead monk makes his thoughts known through automatic writing, an artist is driven to paint the face of a young girl in everything, the local potter feels the Goddess's hand very close, and everyone seems to be feeling portents of doom with moments of holy ecstasy shining in now and again. Liked the Glastonbury locale and the characters, although the supernatural element left me unmoved. I like "woo-woo" in general so maybe it was just the unexpected inclusion here.

Deborah Crombie is a masterful mystery writer, who seamlessly builds characters while she builds the plot. A Finer End is set in Glastonbury in England and Crombie is at her best in creating the atmosphere of the town and the historic Abbey.

Deborah Crombie gives us another spellbinding novel of mysteries--one contemporary, one ancient--an investigation that will challenge Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James personally and professionally. The story takes place in Glastonbury UK and we get lots of history about King Arthur who is buried there and the power in that area. There is a connection to the present day characters and the characters from the past. Crombie handles this layered plot along with the ongoing romance between the two main characters with ease. The theme of the story is redemption and hope. It also shows a bit of a struggle between good and evil. You have to suspend your disbelief somewhat in regards to the mythical and spiritual concepts in order to fully enjoy this book. I look forward to reading the next installment of this series and I highly recommend this book to those who love mystery with some history.
