I just finished reading this jewel of a book. This memoir by scholar and literary critic Vivian Gornick is intelligently written; she gives all the information necessary for the reader to gather the pieces of the puzzle of her life, without dumbing it down one bit. Profound insights about the process of self-creation, autonomy, and the creative process. This is the sort of book that with each subsequent reading, you peel yet another layer to discover a new angle you had not seen before. Highly recommended.

not one of the best our book club has picked out. A bit too whiny, 'poor me' for my taste
