Bernie Gunther was a policeman when Germany went on the rampage of Europe with Hitler as it leader. Bernie is assigned to a general to whom you cannot say no and finds himself accompanying cruel brutal men when he would rather be just a simple policeman. He has no choice but his very existence is imperiled as others try to kill him and/or hinder his actions. After the war he is captured by Amis (Americans) while he sails in the Caribbean. He is imprisoned, tortured, and returned to Germany. All Amis believe that he is a Nazi but Bernie never joined the party and he hated Hitler. His problem is he is German and he was an officer.

When Bernie's travels land him in Germany he is to identify a German war criminal. He has endured much but he finds Elizabeth, a lover he has spent time with time & again during his life. He tells the Americans that she wants to marry. It is a ploy but he finds when he tells her that it is her wish so he marries her. Now he must identify the man the Americans seek. This is a fascinating tale with an ending with a unique twist. It's a read that helps one look at WWII through the eyes of a simple policeman. A good, good read.
