This is the second book in the Lost Fleet series that follows the adventures of Black Jack Geary. The second book picks up where the first left off, a Fleet of ships trapped behind enemy lines trying to outguess the defenders and find their way home.Facing impossible odds and challanges that would cause a normal commander to surrender at the first possible chance. This commander continues on driving the Fleet toward ,or away as it seems, home. I enjoyed the first book and I loved this one, so much i went online and couldn't find the next book here so i bought it from amazon so i can continue the adventure. The story talks about jump gates (points) and super jump gates (points). Both are not new to Sci-fi but this author adds a twist that only starts to reveil itself in this book. The super gate technology might have been gained from an alien race , unknown to the Alliance or anybody abord the fleet and no records in the database describe this contact with an unknown alien race. The author leaves this avenue open i'm sure to add more to the plot further down the road in future books of the series.

Jack Campbells view of space travel and space warfare are realistic from a reader point of view and probably more "real like" to future space travel. I'm looking foward to the next book in the series and exploring the unknown alien race and their involvement in this series storyline.

The second book in Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series. If you have read the first book, you should know about what to expect (if you haven't, you will need to, not a stand alone). There is much more of the same here, Black Jack Geary continues to lead his ever-diminishing fleet through enemy territory, trying to make it home, while dealing with threats from without and 100 years of stubborn tradition from within. Campbell does a great job of maintaining suspense while waiting for that pesky light to travel before giving you a fantastic read of all of the action. I couldn't put this book down, and hope that Campbell can keep his pace (first 2 books in 7 months, and 11 more until book 3). Quickly becoming my favorite sci-fi series.

This is the sequel to "dauntless" and is probably the second in an extended series. The series is a great read for military, especially naval, buffs who also have an interest in good scifi. Every type of fleet ship mentioned has an earthbound ocean-going equivalent.Great action and a well thought out overall quest will have you wanting the next in the series asap! Highly recommended!

What can I say that the other reviewers haven't. This is great space opera about planetary systems at war with each other. They do need to be read in sequence and I have all five in this series and the first two of the sequel series. The third in the sequel series is on my Wishlist.

When I read this book I could barely put it down. It really pulls you in and is very lifelike. Can't wait to start #3.
