Fatally Flaky - Goldy Schulz, Bk 15
Author: Diane Mott Davidson
Cynics say getting married is a death wish... — It's been a long, rainy summer for Goldy Schulz, who is engaged in planning wedding receptions for what seems to be all of Aspen Meadow. It's bad enough that Billie Attenborough, the bride from hell, has changed her menu six times and the event date twice. Now she wants to move the location ...  more »

I used to really love this series. Then they started getting just a little weaker with each successive book. The last 3 prior to this one were just so-so. This one isn't even that good. As much as I love Ms. Davidson herself, she is just phoning these in now. Every one has become one-dimensional and the uncle character in this one who I think we are supposed to develop an affection for just comes across as a somewhat nice old drunk. I won't bother with thes anymore.

I stumbled across the Goldy series a year or so ago and read all the books. I was excited to read Fatally Flaky. I must say this is probably my least favorite book of the series. There was no real mystery to this book, I saw every twist coming and it was all very basic. A quick, simple read. The one thing I'm finding more and more distasteful about this series is how Marla, Goldy's friend, is portrayed. Origionally she was the cheerful chubby gal, but now Ms. Davidson is making her more of the fat, lazy, rich woman who can't controll her eating, having her down half a dozen crab cakes in one sitting. If you're a Goldy fan go ahead and read Fatally Flaky but don't expect as much as Davidson's first few books in this series.

I was disappointed in this, my first Diane Davidson book. I had read reviews of her earlier books and thought I'd enjoy this one. But the writing is amateurish, the plot line thin and it seems the heroine's head is constantly filled up with elaborate and pretentious recipes. I understand she's a caterer, but Please! She doesn't give much notice to either her husband or her son, who is constantly "farmed out" to one friend or another. She's a basically unlikable character. Even though her husband is a police detective, she repeatedly breaks the law, removing evidence from the scene of a crime, entering places related to the crime when she has no right to be there, etc. She never suffers any consequences for these felonious actions. I got very tired of the over-the-top descriptions of every morsel of food consumed. I also perceived the author to be something of a snob for the descriptions on the appearance of some of the characters. I would not waste your time reading this author unless you like reading about food.

More sustained suspense--more 3-D depiction of family tensions and teenage intensity. More admiration for the auhors development in writing and cooking skills
