Much of this book has nothing to do with old Crusoes new adventures. After a couple of boring rescues at sea (not his, he makes the rescues this time) he visits the colony on the old island upon which he was marooned. The great adventures for half of the book are of those that he left behind: some 17 Spaniards and five Englishmen who detest each other and have several run-ins, but like the good Christians they profess to be, will not do one another in. Doesnt the good guy always let the villain get away? Somehow, given the times, this does not seem to portray the mean of these two nationalities towards one another. And, guess what? The most notorious finds God, although it takes him 26 pages to do so. Another miracle at a time when Protestants and Catholics are butchering one another: Crusoe, a devout Protestant, is overly impressed with a Catholic priest whom he has saved. After skirmishes with the neighboring savages, Crusoe finally departs for the Coromandel coast of India where they are bound to trade, but first a stop on Madagascar for more butchering of the population then a stop on the Malabar coast. Finally, his adventures! Although they are described in very little detail; more like summaries in a travel log. Not unlike some of his other works, I found this to be another boring and preposterous book. Well, at least the grammar has been updated from that of the 17th century.
