If you've ever been bothered by an "inappropriate" response to a death--anger, apathy, joy--then this is a book you should read. The author has had a lot of death happen around her and many varied responses. In The Farewell Chronicles, she explores the whys and concludes that the "sadness" that is deemed appropriate is not the only viable emotion. She has a healthy view that she shares here.

The Farewell Chronicles is one of the finest books I have read. The author establishes a rapport with the reader in the blink of an eye, and from that point on, Ms. Rufus allows the reader to feel that she is speaking personally and directly to her or him.If this is the only book you read about death, you could not be better served. What a beautiful, special book.

If you like memoir-like writing that includes writing about a topic, but is more a collection of personal essays, then you might like this book. It is journalistic in its presentation, not researched, which was what I had hoped for when I bought it. If you like segments on NPR's All Things Considered, for example, then you will enjoy this.
