Anne Avery creates a future where an opressive government rules with a heavy hand. Settlers on new worlds like Far Star must not only work the land with few resources, they also face increasing taxes and oppression. Dayra Smith is one such settler. Her worries are greater with her brother's father hounding her for money she took to flee his home. Coll Larren is a former Rebel Alliance leader who has been wandering for two years after a rebellion gone bad. When he is stranded on Far Star, he ends up rescuing Dayra from a bad situation.
