Eve Taggert grew up knowing how to survive. Her alcoholic mother hit her, didn't feed her and generally made her feel unwanted. When Eve gives birth to her little girl Junie, she wants her to never feel that way.
Eve's brother, Cal, has always made sure that Eve and Junie are cared for, promising to never let their mother get to know Junie.
Junie and her girlfriend Izzy are found murdered on a snowy day at a playground that is not well-used. Their throats are slashed and Eve's world has fallen apart.
She pursues finding out what happened to her Junie and Izzy. She has to embark on talking and dealing with people that she has avoided being near.

This book has some major twists and is not predictable.

Not sure what audience this is for, older than 9-10 but maybe for the 14-? ages
Engel makes the location sound like a bunch of hillbillies and I didn't like that theme
Story was mostly told in 'thought' form with not a lot of dialogue, don't like that format either
For me just not a very well written book

A dark and disturbing novel about the double murder of two young girls in the fictional town of Barren Springs, Missouri. Eve Taggert is a young mom out for vengeance after the murder of her 12 year old daughter, Junie, and her best friend, Izzy. She will stop at nothing to find the truth in her poverty stricken small town, even if it means visiting her past in the drug ridden hillsides full of childhood nightmares. Full of disturbing twists and dark truths, this one will have you flipping the pages.
