If you haven't read Dallas before, don't start with this book. Perhaps she is slipping a bit. Seems she researched about "fallen women" of the West and wanted to write a fair story, with respect for said women. The main character, Beret, was just too stupid, sorry for lack of better word. She continually put herself in dangerous situations, certain that she could protect herself; unfortunately she has no plans for protection. Everyone just happened to be wealthy: father and uncle made millions, cop is from wealthy family, everyone found a way to get rich. Book is an easy read, an enjoyable few hours.

If you like historical fiction and find yourself intrigued by this book, please read Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Series featuring a midwife who lends her service to the humble working class of New York City at the turn of the century.
Moves right along...not your predictable story line.
This is not my very favorite of Sandra Dallas's books but she is one of my favorite authors, by far. This story is about a woman who finds out her sister has been murdered in a Denver brothel. The same sister who slept with her cheating husband in New York. Beret goes to Denver to find out who murdered Lillie and meets with resistance to her investigation. I, too, found a couple of the situations lacking sense but I was not put off by them. This book is much more of a mystery novel than the others of Dallas's that I have read. My favorite is Prayers for Sale which I have listened to twice and now own.
Not to take anything away from Sandra Dallas, but the above mentioned recommendation of the Gaslight Series is an excellent one.
