Brings the civil war alive. The main character is a gentleman and an officer. He is very likeable. He is a religious man who is very straight laced. He told to investigate a murder. Good read.

Interesting book, great story. Set in Civil War time. It was difficult for me to read the style of writing, however. I am not sure I would read another like this, but am glad to have finished this one.

I enjoyed this book. I like to read almost anything about the civil war and this was no exception. Abel Jones is a tough little banty rooster! The beginning of the book is a little slow, but give it some time..I especially liked the way that the author writes on the human condition of the times. It reminded me of Charles Dickens. A good mystery!

This is my first Owen Parry book. A delightful read and a very passionate writer.
There are several excerpts within the book that relate directly to actual historical events during the Civil War, however the author has taken some literary liberties in adjusting the timeline to accommodate his story.
I love the way that Owen Parry writes in the Welsh dialect to make the experience more authentic and memorable.
I thought the mystery had ended on or about Chapter 13, but it does continue and has a more surprising ending.
I am now getting ready to read "Shadows Of Glory", Owen Perry's second book.
After that, its on to read his Christmas Book "Our Simple Gifts: Civil War Christmas Tales". I really like this author's style.

This is the first in a series by a wonderful author. I laughed a lot over his earthy descriptions of people, events, etc. Also, the historical data around which these stories are built is sound. Recommended if you like the combination of suspense and history.
