I know of the Alaskan Malamute because of the famous Alaskan Iditarod. We also had a Siberian Husky, which is very similar in habits and characteristics to the Malamute. The Innuit People initially domesticated the dogs to pull heavy weights long distances in difficult terrains.

The author makes a great point about these dogs: They are quickly bored. Before selecting a Malamute, be sure the family will dedicate the hours necessary to keep these dogs happy. They need lots of exercise and demand frequent interaction with their owners. They also need regular grooming.

We brought our pet inside during excessively hot summers because he couldn't cope with the 100+ days. How did we know? He dropped 15 lbs. in just a couple of weeks. Once comfortable inside, he regained weight and became active and lively again. We've always had dogs (over our 50+ years of marriage). However, these animals were the most demanding (although lovable) breed we have ever had.
