This, truly, is one of the most powerful books I have ever read. I have re-read it several times and it never fails to move me. I recommend it for everyone.

I have enjoyed every book that I have read by Leon Uris.

That said, "Exodus" was one of the most powerful of his books, at least in my opinion and it hit directly into my heart. Period of total upheaval just after WW2, with many, many, many Jewish survivors attempting to get to Palestine. Israel became a nation in 1948, before that the area was under British control. That administration did not want to have even more Jewish people arriving in Palestine - there was enough trouble already between the Jewish and Arab peoples living in a very small land area each claimed as their birthright.

If you know your history, you will know that there were very few countries who wanted to take war refugees....there were numerical and status controls and not applied to just Jewish survivors....there were many survivors who spent several years AFTER the war languishing in displaced persons camps, just trying to get into another country where they might finally live a free live.

I have read it more than once and will likely read it again at least once.

This is one of the only books that I have ever read, where I can honestly say I enjoyed the movie "almost" as much as the book.

Recommended highly.

An amazing story of how the Jews have fought for their homeland for so many years...I liked the main story enough to give it 4 stars but parts of the book read a little like a history book.

It's a bit of a long read but worth the time. An amazing story that sucked me in and gave me a new perspective on the struggles the Jews have faced and the way they selflessly have of themselves to ensure the future generations of their people.

This is the great epic of the return to Israel of the survivors of the Holocaust and the early establishment of the Jewish nation. Some of the characters are real and some fictional. Most of it is told through the eyes of an American nurse and an Israeli freedom fighter. A truly great book that will also give you an insight into the historical facts. A really great read.

Classic story, great writing, should be read for the history alone.

This look at the foundation of the State of Israel is one of my top 10 favorite books. Interesting characters caught in the sweep of history. It's worth a re-read.

This is a great saga of the struggle of our people for freedom and life!!!
The characters in this book are ALIVE. They are REAL. Every person seems to be drawn from the real life people who passed through it all. Karen and Dov, those children who survived the horrors of the massacre of the Jewish people in the Holocaust, are left all alone, with no place to go back to, and are left with just one dream: to find a place to make it a home... Ari Ben Canaan, one of those brave people who risked their life to save others and bring them to their own land... The story of the half-dead orphan children going on a hunger strike to let them go home to Eretz Israel, the Land of Israel, is one of the most powerful and moving in literature.
The spirit of the bravery of our people, our dream to live in peace in the only place where the word "Jew" is not a curse, beats like a living heart in every letter of this book!
And the tragic ending of this novel shows the terrible truth: our struggle is not over.
Ari Ben Canaan said to the British: Let My People Go! Leon Uris, in the end of the book, says, Let My People Live!

This is the first book I've read by this author. It is a wonderful historic novel of the birth of the nation Israel. Don't let the small print and many pages discourage you. It held my attention from beginning to end. Besides a good novel I also learned a lot about the toughness of the early pioneers of Israel many years before it became a nation. If you are a lover of the history of Israel I highly recommend this book.

This is an excellent book, and remains one of my favorites. I base much of my knowledge of Israel and its history on this book. I'm only posting it because I discovered a paperback version of it.
