It is a mystery how a book qualifies for a Pulitzer Prize, which this book won in 1980. Other reviewers liked it. I wanted to read it since it is a classic. I couldn't even get to page 200. The prose was tedious and long-winded about this criminal and his girlfriend, and included more details than I cared to learn about, i.e. their frequent sex and how and with whom. The plot might have been great, but it shouldn't have taken over 1000 pages to get to the point. I like memoirs and true life stories, but could NOT get into this one and cannot recommend it...

This book is the winner of the 1980 Pulitzer Prize. It is a true story of Gary Gilmore, who in 1977 became the first person executed in the U.S. since the reinstitution of the death penalty. A chilling look into the mind of a murderer.

In depth true life novel of Gary Gilmore. First man to be executed in 1976 after a 17 year hiatus. Hard to put down. A pulitzer prize winner by Norman Mailer.
