This was an interesting memoir about a professor whose former student becomes obsessed with him. She proceeds to send him harrassing emails, eventually escalating to attempting to destroy his reputation by emailing wild allegations to his professional network and disparaging him on Amazon, Goodreads, Wikipedia, etc. Although it was fascinating to read about the student's escalation into cyberstalking, there were two contemplative sections of the book dealing with literature and race which didn't grab me. Nonetheless, the story is worth reading and it is especially disturbing that the student continues to harrass the author.

Sadly, I've come to the conclusion that I like neither Mr. Lasdun nor his writing. So my review may not be strictly fair. Of course, after reading this it is possible that his description of his internet stalking by a former student and friend may not be fair either. I simply did not believe a good deal of his reasoning and excuses. I felt that he was calculating the process of 'telling his side.' While that probably isn't accurate, I find it telling that his very entitled attitude did not generate much sympathy for what he says he went through. It's all about him in his world.
