The Ethical Slut A Guide to Infinite Sexual Possibilities
Author: Dossie Easton, Catherine A. Liszt
The authors define the term slut as "a person of any gender who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you." The term is reclaimed from its usual use as a pejorative and as a simple label for a promiscuous person. Instead, it is used to signify a person who is accepting of thei...  more »

This is such a fantastic book. A friend of mine bought it for me and it presented a lot of new ideas while also confirming some of the ideas I already had about polyamory. It's not just a book trying to convert anyone and everyone though, it just presents the ideas in a logical way and states again and again that it may not be for you and YOU need to want to be poly for poly to work for you-- not just your partner(s).

Aside from that, it's just a great book about communication, almost a self help book for people who want to get to know their sexual side, or who already do know their sexual side and can't find people who understand. The Authors understand and they give tips on 'owning your feeling,' ways to fight constructively, strategies for dealing with jealousy, and so much more.

The gender studies major in me loves the first chapter and the ways they deconstruct monogamy and antisex culture. They point out loud and clear that NO it has NOT always been the way it is now.

It's such a great read, I'd recommend it to anyone interested in sexuality, gender studies, polyamory, having really strong supportive relationships, honest people, guilty people, and anyone proud to be a slut. :)

Even if you have no desire whatsoever to assume the title role, The Ethical Slut: A guide to infinite sexual possibilities is a valuable and informative read. 'Slut' is used here in a reclaimed sense, to mean someone "who has the courage to lead life according to the radical proposition that sex is nice and pleasure is good for you." Authors Dossie Easton and Catherine Liszt do an admirable job discussing the world view and possible lifestyle choices of an ethical slut, but their greatest accomplishment is describing some of the skills necessary for polyamorous living. These are essentially the interpersonal skills that anyone should develop: how to understand, cope with, and modulate one's own feelings (including jealousy and insecurity), listen, communicate one's needs and wants, reassure and give love to others. Dossie and Catherine write with sensitivity and humor, outlining general principles and tips rather than specific how-to's. They make it clear that sluthood involves a lot of hard work, emotional and logistic. Nonetheless, this book will open new doors, by asking you to examine and perhaps defend the attitudes behind your own choices in sexuality, showing what else is possible, and encouraging you to develop generally useful interpersonal skills. Especially recommended to those interested in gender studies, polyamory and the philosophy of sex, this book will be a worthy addition to anyone's to-be-read list.

This book gives great advice about owning your feelings, enjoying your sex and sexuality, and setting limits that make you and your partner(s) comfortable.

Although the book is a bit too "flower child" at times and could focus more on emotional connections rather than just sexual ones since it is touted as a poly book, I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in experiencing a positive message on sex and sexuality as well as alternate relationship options.
