This was a cute and quick read with some neat puzzles throughout. It is described as a blend of Charlie and the Chocolate factory and A Night at the Museum and that description fits the story perfectly. I enjoyed it but not enough to read more books in this series.
However, this was one my nine year old son set aside...he thought it took too long for the story to get going and thought it was "boring". He's a big fan of fantasy books (Harry Potter, Warriors, The Unwanteds); so maybe this just wasn't his cup of tea.
Overall this was a quick read with some neat puzzles throughout the book. It calls out a lot of great literary books for kids which is great and hopefully will encourage kids who read it to go and pick up some of these other great books. I personally agreed with my son and thought it was a bit boring and simple. It's enjoyable but not great. I would recommend to middle grade readers who enjoy puzzles and mysteries. Young adult and older readers will probably be a bit bored.

What an absolute FUN read! Mr. Penumbras 24 Hour Bookstore is my dream book store, but. Mr. Lemoncellos library is my dream library! Part Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, part Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with a dash of The Hunger Games (minus the violence) thrown in, this story illustrates what fun a library can be if you take advantage of the wealth of knowledge is has to offer AND share it with others. My favorite part: the rebus!

The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of a couple random chapters where Charles or Haley all of a sudden are directing the story speaking in first person which wasn't the same as the rest of the book and Mr. Lemoncello's odd uninformed behavior towards the end.
Overall though a great book, enjoyable and fast to read. Reminded me of how much fun I had reading From the mixed up files...which is referenced in this book :) A mix of how cool libraries and games are vs. what happens if you spend your time playing video games, using e-readers, and forgetting to work as a team. I liked the messages it got across in the book and definitely one to recommend to kids to discover the amazing world that comes from reading paper books and spending time in actual libraries!
