This is an exciting book about a brother and sister who leave Ireland in 1851 and set off for America. A suspenseful story that kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the historical setting, also.

A page-turning historical adventure by an author who never fails to please! My mother and I read this cook and its sequel, Lord Kirkle's Money, together. Avi's research is extensive, his characters are engaging, and this novel has lots of unexpected twists. Good for older children and adults.

Avi is perhaps, one of the best historic fiction writers for middle school students in my opinion. My students ( and myself) love his books. This book was very informative on the plight of the Irish vs. their English landlords. The plot never weakens and it keeps you hanging on every next chapter. I highly recommend this book and once you finish it you will have to get Bk. 2.
