In winter 1942-43, in anticipation of the final roundup, Mayer and the remnants of his family arranged with the Ukrainian Ivan Bur that he would hide them and another Jewish family for payment. In January-April 1943 they built a bunker under Bur's house and went into hiding. Throughout 1943-44 other Jews continued to arrive at the bunker and in August 1944, when Drohobych was liberated by the Soviets, 45 people were living there. Bur was drafted into the Soviet army and fell in battle. After the war Mayer, his mother, and his half-brother settled in the USA.« less
