Great coming of age book set in the 30's and 40's in Northern Montana. Wonderful characters and dialogue, and story. A classic! Very funny and had me smiling most of the time reading it.

If you like setting, scenery and narration of a great story, this book is for you. It adds depth to the other two of the trilogy. I devoured it.

Another classic Ivan Doig novel. A tale about a turning point year in a young man living in Montana just before World War II. His family seems on the point of breaking up and he finds himself as a 15-year-old assigned to keep an aging alcoholic out of trouble. The book concludes with a forest fire that changes the protagonist's perspective on most of the people close to him. Doig's writing is simple, straightforward, yet frequently soars into transcendence. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful writers of the twentieth century.
