I first read Toth's 'My Love Affair with England' before taking a trip there. When we got back I read this. It would have been nice to have read it before the trip - it has a wealth of information. But I enjoyed it just as much afterwards. If you love the UK you will love reading this book whether you are planning a trip there or not. I've wished I could get hold of her address and beg her to write another book. If she writes anything about any part of the UK, I will buy it the day it's released! I first read these books from the library, then bought my own copies.

I knew that I shouldn't read this book because it would make my desire to return to England much greater than it already was. And I was definitely right. But with this book, I think planning my next trip to England (whenever it may be) is going to be a much richer experience. The book is a combination travel guide and memoir of travels. Next time I will try out the thumbprint method of travel, somewhere in Cornwall I think. I'd love to take one of the trips described in this book!

This book is a little dated, but it is a must read. Susan Allen Toth makes you feel like you are actually traveling with her through Great Britain.

Thinking of going to England (or Scotland?) - or ever wanted too?
You'll want to take a look at this book (or similar ones). If nothing else it'll give you the ideals of what you might want to see and do (or not to see and not do). Covers nearly everything under the sun.

Detailed but still homey guide to all things English with emphasis on gardens, etc. Subtle humor with personal stories that illustrate the places reviewed and living in England for more than a few days! Lots of background information on the sites listed that make you want to visit! Her enthusiasm for England is catching! I can't wait to go again to England and see some of her recommendations!
