Dean Koontz's books are always hit or miss for me, and this one was a miss. The only creepy parts were a few conversations between David and the serial killer he suspects killed his girlfriend years ago. I skimmed long descriptions of houses and rooms in hopes that the ending would make time spent reading this book worthwhile, but alas the ending was a silly disappointment.

This is probably my least favorite Koontz book. I usually really enjoy all of his books and his "grab you by the seat of the pants" writing. Not always a fan of some of his endings but always in for the ride. On this one, I didn't get that. The very beginning was interesting and kept me wondering but after awhile I started to get bored and David, our main character, really started to get on my nerves. Then the ending happened and I was less than impressed. Not sure what really happened or what kind of ending that was but I was glad to walk away and put it behind me.

Koontz is among my favorite authors but some of his books are better than others. Before I read this I had seen some disappointing reviews from readers I trust so I went in with little expectation. I enjoyed it more than I expected. I was quite intrigued and that kept me reading. I really wanted to know what was going on. I liked the "happily ever after..." ending even though it all seemed somewhat beyond believability. It's been a somewhat stressful season with too much real life interfering with my reading time. I found this to be a nice magical escape.
