Rather than rely on diagnosis-based treatment decisions, the new curriculum and this text focus on treatment decisions based on assessment findings. The editors have provided this change in focus, while integrating some case presentation and discussions of diagnoses to enhance the basic training.
The primary audience for this book is students in EMT-B training programs. Most of it, if not all, would be too basic for paramedics, flight nurses, or physicians. The book is attractive and includes many good photographs, drawings, charts, and tables to support the text. Many chapters have a section at the end called FYI that takes the subject matter to a more advanced level and discusses some specific diagnoses. Chapters also include case presentations and questions to foster discussion. The lack of references, however, is a weakness. Overall, this is a very good book for EMT-B students. It provides good assessment-based management training for prehospital providers.« less
