Perhaps as a means of identifying themselves, the early Christians adopted existing pagan symbols, such as the circle, triangle, zigzag for water, and the fish, which eventually became the adopted symbol of the Christian. It is interesting to note that the cross, on the other hand, is the most universally recognized symbol of Christianity, and is used in many different forms along with other early Christian symbols throughout church embroidery today.
