Another entry in the history of Comte Saint-Germain, this one set in thirteenth century Hungary. But the formula seems to be wearing a little thin for me: Saint-Germain goes to some foreign locale, there's political intrigue, he falls under suspicion, he almost dies...on to the next place. But this one seems more somber than most I suppose, because none of the Comte's romantic interests bring him any joy, it's all depressing and we just wait to see how he gets out of it.
It would be interesting to know what a new reader would think of this. Saint-Germain is a vampire, of sorts, but I don't think anyone new to this series would catch on for a while. Yarbro must figure anyone reading is familiar enough with him not to need explanations about his condition and, ummm, needs.
Still, Yarbro's attention to historical detail is unmatched. Only thing lacking is a map. In fact, I think there must be two paragraphs on every page about what the characters are wearing. Her vocabulary sent me to the dictionary more than once, which I enjoy although I'm sure others don't.
All in all, an adequate book in the series even if not terribly satisfying.
