This book is great! I really like his writing style. :)

This is the second book of the Genesis of Shannara books by Terry Brooks. I am not a big fantasy fan. I find other worlds and their weird words tiresome as a rule.
The first book and now this book have both kept me riveted. This is a writer at the pinnacle of craft. Because ultimately this is a story that grabs you and won't let you go.
Hawk has discovered his true nature. The few remaining Knights of the Word are tired but press on. The ghosts have gone in search of their lost leader and the elves are slowly awakening to their own mortal peril.
I know it all sounds odd and off but while you are reading these books you can't look away. These characters are alive and fully formed in the imagination. You are rooting for them in the same way you'd root for your own family.
Really great. Read this series. You won't be disappointed.

This series makes an effort to link Terry Brook's seminal Shannara series to his Word & Void series and it is a remarkable feat. This series combines classic fantasy elements (elves, magic, etc.) with more "real world" sensibilities (guns, vehicles, known American geography) and it's a great blend. The characters are likable and real. At times, the danger is palpable. Definitely recommend.
I am a huge "Word and the Void" fan, but I was never into the Shannara books. This second book focuses more on the elves, which isn't so great for me. Although I can appreciate all the work he put into the elf characters and the society, I still have very little interest in them.
That aside, as a middle book in a trilogy, I was happy to find that Brooks writing style helps it move along smoothly and in an engaging way.

Terry Brooks is one of my favorite authors and he doesn't disappoint in this book. He is wonderful with characterization and uncannily creates this whole new civilization. I loved it.
Great story.
