Terry Brooks is one of my favorite authors and he doesn't disappoint in this book. He is wonderful with characterization and uncannily creates this whole new civilization. I loved it.

I am a huge "Word and the Void" fan, but I was never into the Shannara books. This second book focuses more on the elves, which isn't so great for me. Although I can appreciate all the work he put into the elf characters and the society, I still have very little interest in them.

That aside, as a middle book in a trilogy, I was happy to find that Brooks writing style helps it move along smoothly and in an engaging way.

This series makes an effort to link Terry Brook's seminal Shannara series to his Word & Void series and it is a remarkable feat. This series combines classic fantasy elements (elves, magic, etc.) with more "real world" sensibilities (guns, vehicles, known American geography) and it's a great blend. The characters are likable and real. At times, the danger is palpable. Definitely recommend.
