Glosa, an international language, is a modification of "Interglossa" by the late Professor Lancelot Hogben. It is designed to be easy to learn, with no complicated grammar and words which are already internationally familiar. Glosa does not aim to replace the Euro-languages - or the other 5000 or so languages of the world - but it should help th... more »ose who wish to communicate quickly and easily and to co-operate with people from other cultures. It also offers many educational advantages. As the vocabulary is based on international Latin and Greek roots, it offers the added educational advantage of helping students to learn the vocabularies of the Euro-languages, and often stimulates them to start studying another Euro-language other than their own. "18 Steps to Fluency in Euro-Glosa" contains sentences in parallel text, showing how to use the items of Glosa Mechanics - for example, how to form tenses, plural, questions and comparison. Each step includes several phrases or sentences for translation practise from Glosa into English and vice versa. Samples of informal letters (correspondence between two penfriends using Glosa) are given in alternate lessons. Illustrations and phrases centred round a certain theme are scattered throughout the text, including: places, parts of the body, in the hospital, things to eat, travel, around the house, in the street, the Post Office, communications, tools, camping and bee-keeping. Two crosswords are also included, one with picture clues, one with word clues. Longer parallel texts are given for the 23rd Psalm and extracts from "Three Men in a Boat" by Jerome K. Jerome and "Richard II" by Shakespeare. Two vocabularies are also provided in the book: "Glosa 1000 into English" and "2000 Most Useful English Words into Glosa 1000 Central Vocabulary". Altogether, the pictures, phrases and translations in this text should demonstrate how it is possible to deal with any scientific, technical, literary, commercial or everyday theme using only those words from Glosa 1000 Central Vocabulary. Answers to all exercises and crosswords are given at the back of the book. The book should be suitable for anyone - from children aged 12 to adults. It should be useful for teachers of Glosa and also for teachers of the humanities, communications and international studies. It should also be helpful for those learning Glosa who prefer to work systematically through exercises.
