I started this book, but had a hard time following it. It wasn't what I thought, or maybe it was me. I was expecting this really great mystery and it was a boring history book.

Truly one of my "top ten" books. It is complex, entertaining, mysterious, with great characters, puzzles, love stories, etc. You'll love it!

I liked this book. I thought it a little hard to follow the story line at times. The characters were numerous and jumped back and forth in time. But I liked the action and the mystery was good.

Interesting, and loaded with historical info, but very difficult to follow. Not a book I would recommend to a friend, unless they understood chess very well and had an excellent knowledge of the French Revolution.

A Hidden Gem. I loved this book. It is detailed, and complex. I highly recommend it.

Thiss book receives raves and has great reviews. I could not get into it. Perhaps becuase I know nothing about chess; perhaps because I have no interest in chess? It's obviously a good book, but not one I could get into.

Loved it! Couldn't put it down until the end. Full of adventure and twists for the intelligent, likeable female heroines with a smidgen of romance.

A complicated but intersting storyline...A mystery with a lot of history thrown in. Sometimes hard to get through.

This is one of my all time favorite books because it is so complex. It is not a beach read, but one where you can lose yourself. Written in two time frames, during the French Revolution and modern day, the action switches back and forth and is sometimes a little hard to follow. But this is well worth the time to pay attention. It is astonishing that this is the author's first novel. The story is so intricate and characters are so well developed, it was a pleasure to read. The story of the chess set and its parallels to the characters will stay with you for a long time.

From Matthew Pearl, author of 'The Dante Club': "Readers thrilled by The Da Vinci Code will relish the mult-layered secrets of The Eight."

'People' wrote: "With alchemical skill, Neville blends modern romance, historical fiction, and medieval mystery...and comes up with gold."

Good fun. Better than The DaVinci Code IMHO.
