He was also involved in numerous archaeology digs in Egypt, Mesopotamia and the Sudan. The narrative begins with an account of Egypt and her people in the latter part of the Neolithic Period, and ends with the description of her conquest by the Romans under Caesar Octavianus, B.C. 30. The history of Egypt as an independent country properly ends with the death of Cleopatra, for this great queen was the last of the independent monarchs who succeeded to the throne of the Pharaohs.
