Loved this one as much as the first one. Great characters and good mystery. Hope all the characters continue to develop.

Another good book in the Cackleberry series. Love the cast of characters.

Book #2 of the Cackleberry Club. I love "cozy" mysteries and this is no exception. I really like the characters and they are fun to read about. And having some recipes is not bad too.

I have enjoyed some of Laura Childs' other cozy mystery series, but I have to say, I was underwhelmed by this one - the first book in the series left me disappointed and I hoped the second would round out the characters, setting, and relationships more. If anything, the people and events were more cardboard than before and the motivation of the characters remains a mystery. Sadly, the book was a struggle to read and almost farcical in its use of trite cliches. I finished the book with an inordinate sense of irritation and the (recurring, even days after completion) desire to shake some sense into the whole cast of characters.

This book was good, but not quite as good as the first one. Hope the characters start to develop more, sometimes they seem more like kids than woman in their 40's and 50's.

When Cackleberry Clubber Suzanne delivers a pie to funeral director Ozzie Driesden, she discovers him not working at the embalming table but lying on the embalming table. She barely has time to recognize his corpse before she's drugged with chloroform. With more suspects than breakfast specials, the Cackleberry Club scrambles to crack the case before one of their own ends up six feet under.

The good: it's an easy quick read. Kind of brain fluff, which sometimes is just what a person needs.
Interesting mystery. Kept me guessing b/c the "culprit" was barely mentioned in passing, and there were so many red herrings pointing toward other (too obvious) characters.

The bad: This series is already starting to remind me of the Goldy Schultz recipe/mysteries. First of all, the main characters must assume the police are morons b/c they do all this sleuthing and keep tons of evidence from the police. They go off in the middle of the night to the middle of nowhere following cars, getting locked in barns etc. And yes the protagonist SAYS she knows the police will solve the crime and that she has great confidence of Officer Doogie (seriously?).

Also like Goldy or Murder She Wrote, I'd stay 100 miles from the "Cackleberry Club" b/c people are dropping like flies when they are anywhere near the place. It has to be one of the most unsafe "small towns" in the history of unsafe small towns. I have the 3rd book in the series. Pretty sure it will be my last.

This is another great book in the series. I enjoyed that all of the main characters are women that I can relate to. Suzanne stumbles on a body and has to find out who did it. Along the way we get to tag along with her antics and the others at the Cackleberry Club. As always the book includes some great recipes to try out.

I find all of Laura Childs's book like eating bacon and eggs--what is not to like? This was fun to read; a great escape.
