A very good novel. But it is not a "German Comedy." There are some humorous scenes, but this is a serious reflection on the difficulties accompanying German reunification in the 1990s. THE GERMAN COMEDY is the title of a previous novel by this author. By the way, Eduard's wife is the daughter of an Italian father and a German Jewish mother, who grew up in Italy, not an American.
