Ecstacity Author:Nigel Coates Ecstacity is many things: a fat visual book to get lost in, to explore and to evoke the experience of the future city; a document of cities as they emerge around us; a guide to our condition in the coming century; a framework to match ourselves with any city we are in. London architect Nigel Coates has dropped his own visionary projects, exhibi... more »tions, interiors and buildings into the context of a far wider cityscape, drawing on seven cities worldwide. The kinetic vistas juxtapose real and fictional elements and incidents that reconstruct the city as it transforms itself before our eyes. A dense flow of real and virtual images arranged in six zones-which incorporate signs and language, boundaries and transgressions, necessity and desires-the book acts as a guide, a description, and a doorway to new aspects of everyday experience. Nigel Coates divides his time between Branson Coates Architecture, the practice he set up with Doug Branson, and the Royal College of Art, where he is Professor of Architectural Design. Major projects have included the Body in London's Millennium Dome [2000], three buildings in Japan-for which he received the Japan Inter-Design Award in 1990-and the Uk's National Centre for Pop Music. Designed by Why Not Associates. Coates has received extensive press and TV coverage as an architect and designer His work will be featured in the Venice Biennale 2000« less
