The best part about this book for me was that it was about real historical characters. I originally started it, and was going to read a few pages before bedtime, and the next thing I knew it was after 2 a.m. and I had finished the entire book! I knew nothing about Lachlan Macquarie when I picked it up, so I think that was an advantage, because I didn't know what would happen next, and some of it was pretty unexpected.
The author's writing style is decent and the book is well edited, but I wouldn't say her prose style is that enthralling or beautiful. It's definitely a plot-driven book, and Macquarie is at the center of it. He certainly led an exciting life with lots of twists and turns. This book covers just the early part of that life, mainly his military career in India, before he even goes to Australia. I am fascinated enough to want to read more about him, so I will definitely be continuing the rest of this series

This is a very good read. I was hooked from the first pages. The author has an engaging writing style. Yes, it is a bit of a history lesson, but a very interesting one. I loved the descriptions of India and China and the goings on there in the early 1800's. If this is an accurate portrayal of the main character (Macquarie) I am impressed. A real hero and man of honor. Also, I loved the character, McKenzie - so funny. I would have liked to see more of him in the story. I am going to read the next in the series right away and probably finish the series.
