Commissario Brunetti is on medical leave at the island of Sant' Erasmo, a small fishing community where there are no secrets. No, this this isn't the customary setting for Brunetti but he is suffering from burnout and is recovering in a house belonging to a wealthy relative of Paola. His investigation concerns the disappearance of bees, poisoning of the lagoon and, of course, murder.

He comes to know David Casati, caretaker of the house, who goes missing during a storm. As one might guess, Casati has been murdered. His friendship with Casati prompts him to investigate what happened and the novel proceeds in that direction.

Using the theme of climate change vs. corporate interests the author finds Brunetti weighing the effects on humanity and the ethics of actions of both past and present as he delves into Casati's death. It's an interesting novel that makes one wonder where Brunetti's conscience will lead him in solving the murder of his friend.

1st book Ive read by Donna Leon. Good! Takes place in Italy, with all Italian cast. A police captin, stressed, goes to a villa for some R&R. Hangs with a guy, they row around the Lagunias. The caretaker is found dead. He delved into the possibility it was murder by digging into his past. Finds that it was probably murder, but it can never be proven. Part of a series of mystery books of Comissario Guido Brunetti

I could not finish this book. I did not like the author's way of writting and it was hard to follow the story line.

The theme of this book, as is many of Donna Leon's, the frightful decimation of Venice's environment by greedy Italian companies. Leon continues to talk about those deadly environmental forces in new ways. And that, in turn, shows us just how rampant the problems are.

As is often the case in a Leon novel, justice seems to be a weak weapon against the ills of the world. 4.5 stars
