Richard Matheson is one of the most influential of the modern authors, whether fiction or science fiction somewhere in between. This book does not disappoint. The story examines a marriage that may be on its last legs but both partner want to work on righting it again. Vacationing at a remote cabin (aren't they best?), they deal with each other and he deals with a young beautiful woman who comes and goes in the cabin as she pleases, always when the wife is away. Is the woman real or is she his imagination and lust in ethereal form? Or something else? She wants him and has him and won't let him go. Her story slowly unfolds and how the events and people around her and the cabin entwine but don't choke--they sneak up quietly. The conclusion wasn't exactly what I expected, even though I should know that a Richard Matheson story never ends the way that it seems it "should."

A fairly rambling ghost story that is ultimately not on par with Matheson's classic Hell House, but is okay if you don't expect much. Too much introspection on the part of the "hero" and not enough stuff really happens. Might be a little too graphic sexually for some people looking for an old fashioned haunted house tale.
