A good read. The hero is strong, but is flawed in that he is harboring a huge amount of guilt (his Great Secret). The heroine discovers this Great Secret and actually blackmails him. Their attraction to each other can't be denied (and they don't). Each secondary character is interesting & plays an important part in the story. My only complaint is that the hero & the villain never had a face-off. A character we hardly know killed him, & so there was no real closure. The editors really dropped the ball here. The rest of the story holds up well & almost makes up for it.

Four years ago when her brother was committed to Bedlam for murder, Artemis Greaves became the companion to her cousin, Lady Penelope. Used to be unnoticed, Aretmis comes to the attention of the Ghost of St. Giles when she and her cousin are accosted on the street. Maximus Batten, the Duke of Wakefield, has posed as the Ghost of St. Giles for many years, searching for the person responsible for the death of his parents. A man calling himself "old scratch" has popped onto the scene and the Duke believes he may have been behind the murders. Now Artemis has discovered his alter-ego and demands that Maximus break her brother out of Bedlam or she will expose him to the authorities.

I wasn't sure that I would like this book in the Maiden Lane series because I wasn't a big fan of Maximus in the previous books. And, even though he is a bit of a bonehead when it comes to Artemis, in the end he finally admitted he couldn't live without her. I loved Artemis and how she dealt with the fact that her brother, Apollo, was committed for murder and she had to accept a position of companion to her selfish cousin. I also was happy that she didn't give Maximus an ultimatum, but let him figure out what he needed to do. My rating: 4 Stars.

This has really been a great series and I have read the books in a day since I can't stop. I love the characters, the storylines are engaging, interesting, show struggles and joy. The females are not whiny and are strong minded.
Just fun reading.

This is one of those 'can't put it down' stories. Luckily, it is a fast read; especially, if you don't stop for the 'lust' details. I prefer something left to my imagination so I choose to skip most of those scenes. Of course, 'the ghost' keeps things hopping and mysterious until the very end. Ms. Hoyt knows how to write 'the happily ever after' ending. Also, I appreciate the Epilogue and the teaser for the next book in the series. I am still not get the secondary story that appears before every chapter. It is probably me being slow. Recommend.

I thought Artemis was such a kick-ass heroine. She does what she can for her brother and later Maximus. I thought Maximus started out just okay. It took most of the book for him to get his head out of his ass. Did get answers about Maximus's parents murder that he blames himself for.
I am interested in Apollo and am interested in finding out what happened the night he was drunk (and 3 of his friends bloody bodies were found next to him). Does he clear his name? I also really want to read Phoebe's story (I think her book is after Apollo's....).
Asa made a brief appearance at the end. He appears to be friends with Apollo.

The Maiden Lane series is unique and leaves me on the edge of my seat! This book is no exception and was very hard for me to put down. The characters are unforgettable and I loved the developing romance. Definitely a A+++ read!

These books keep getting better!! An excellent addition to the Maiden Lane series, I didn't want this one to end!

Possible Spoiler Alert
I don't agree with reviewer about the ending, I don't want to spoil the story, but I was happy with it and felt it added closure and camaraderie between main character and others in the series. Well done.
