A classic. I remember reading it as a kid, and when my book club read it a few years ago, I found a whole different perspective on the book, and its characters. I highly recommend this book as a snapshot (albeit a large one) of a certain generation of American youth.
Drifters by Michnener is a wonderful travelogue especially if you've spent any time on the beaches of Spain and the markets of Morroco. His characters are young, idealistic, adventurous and brave. I loved this journey during a turbulent time in America's history. If only all of Michener's stories could be this compelling.
Drifters is probably the Michener book that I can place myself into most easily. I read the book the first time, in my late teens and after I returned from a year spent wandering in Europe, working some, walking some.
After reading his book, I realized how much I had missed of all there was to see and do....was on my way back to Europe but got waylaid by life.
Love the book and it stays on my shelf waiting for me to read it again a 3rd time.
One of his best books, IMO

This is a very old paperback. Based in the late 60's early 70's, this is a nice view the development of the drug culture and epic party spots of the world. Michener has always been wordy, but this work of fiction really builds the story in your mind. I wanted to jet off to the south of spain just to see if my imagination (and his description) was correct.
Michener unfolds a powerful drama about 6 runaways adrift in the world of dreams, drugs, and pleasure they have created for themselves. Spun out in Spain, Marrakech, and Mocambique, Michener reveals the frantic hendonistic pursuit of the youth of that generation.
In his triumphant best seller, James Michener unfolds a powerful and poignant drama of six young runaways adrift in a world they have created out of dreams, drugs, and dedication to pleasure. With the sure touch of a master, Michener pulls us into the dark center of their private world, whether it's in Spain, Marrakech, or Mozambique, and exposes the naked nerve ends with shocking candor and infinite compassion.
"A superior, picaresque novel...and a revealing mirror held up to contemporary society."
