It wasn't as good as I expected...but I guess its her first novel, so maybe she will improve. No character development at all...no depth to the main characters, I never really got why Claude was so in love with Valentine, she didnt really DO anything, they had nothing in common, etc. The part I liked the most was the descriptions of the fashions, not really anything about the people in it. I felt like stopping but muddled through to the end...didnt get better.

This book seems to have low ratings here and on other sites and I feel it needs defending. I enjoyed this book, but then I am interested in sewing and couture dressmaking. If this is not an interest of yours, you will probably be bored. The main character lived, breathed, and ate dress design and would analyze everyone he met to design the perfect style and color for that person. His obsession with his work leaked into an obsession with a woman. He had a sense of isolation and being set apart from the main stream of life that some people would find depressing but I felt it was an honest depiction of a genius' life.
