This book and its companion that came out a few years later, African nights, are among the most haunting ones I've ever read, not because Gallmann writes "great literature," but because of her great heart, her courage, her love, and because of what it tells us about Africa.

It contains a Glossary of African words and thirty black and white photographs.

I loved this book so much! It is unbeliveable all the things that happen to the main character and her family. I was in tears many times throughout the book. But, it is also filled with hope. There is never a dull moment. This will always be one my favorites!
