A very good book, but a long one. It is about the life of John C. Fremont who was largely responsible for settling California and the exploration of the area needed for the Transcontinental railroad through the western mountains. The man led a remarkable life, and was a true more modern day explorer who ranks up there with some of the earliest who explored this continent. His wife was also a remarkable and patient woman who was always his greatest promoter. The author has done a great job of researching this period prior to and shortly after the Civil War. Loved this book, but it is a very long one and the parts dealing with the Civil War were a little tedious. Genny
