DRAGON'S OATH is a "novella" in the HOUSE OF NIGHT series. It's a short story, and focuses on Bryan "Dragon" Lankford, the sword master. Read on three audio CDs, the story moves quickly, and gives fans a glimpse into the history of this secondary character in the series.
Dragon is tending to Jax's funeral pyre and flashes back to when he first meets Anastasia and the oath he makes to her before they can be together.
Ms. Davies breathes life into Dragon and gives him heart and soul. His beginnings are far from Midwest America. His journey begins as the third of five sons born to an Earl across the Atlantic. When his romantic entanglements cause his family disgrace, his father disowns him and banishes him to America. On his trip to the docks, his life takes a drastic change. There he becomes a Fledgling and finds that he has a talent for the sword, the only possession his father allowed him to take with him.
Ms. Davies makes the listener feel the anguish and loss that Dragon feels when he is disowned. She captures his wonder at his newfound abilities and opportunities. And she shares his zest for life as he tries to win Anastasia's heart.
DRAGON'S OATH explains the background history of Dragon and Anastasia's love and the torment he experiences after her death in a previous novel. I have to admit, DRAGON'S OATH is my favorite story in the HOUSE OF NIGHT series so far. It was not nearly as dark as the rest of the series, and it made a character seem more real, by getting to know him more thoroughly. I look forward to the Cast team creating more novellas in this vein, and hope that Ms. Davies will be there to bring them to life on audio.
